Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former
President of the United Arab Emirates, initiated the construction of Masjid
Al-Nahyan. The initiative was meant to bring together various aspects of
Islamic art and culture in one place to inspire its viewers. Construction began
in 1996, but it took 11 years for the project to be completed. Since 2008 (two
years after Sheikh Zayed’s death), the mosque has been named after him and
continues to emphasize Islam’s highest values through artistic expression -
especially that which celebrates compassion, peace and tolerance.
At its most fundamental, Grand Mosque's
purpose can easily be dismissed as a landmark destination that focuses on
Islamic worship and culture. But dig deeper, one will realize that this
building and its contents are more than Abu Dhabi’s identity or the UAE’s
central religious place of interest. The heart of Abu Dhabi is not only a
well-known religious site but also an architectural masterpiece with
open-mindedness taking care of all in attendance. Truly, although these doors
are open to people from all walks of life, it is also a place where one will
come to know the exceptional coalesce between Islamic and other significant world
cultures. And, the fact that spaces like the Grand Mosque use architecture to
celebrate those who visit makes it something very special indeed!

The architecture of the mosque is a symphony
of artistic and architectural styles. The most remarkable features include four
spires or minarets of various geometric shapes; the first one is a square
section that is greatly influenced by the Andalusian and Moroccan styles, as it
has artfully intertwined decorative elements such as textured mosaic tiles on
its surface. The second spire has an octagonal shape, with intricate Mameluke
designs, like true Persian minarets. The third spire is cylindrical in shape
and exemplifies the Ottoman phase that was dominating Cairo once upon a time.
Finally, there is also a thin but tall and elegant pinnacle that has been
derived from the Mughal style during the Fatimid times in particular.
